Hi guys and happy holiday season! This is my favorite time of year and I'm always looking for fun festive stuff to do with my kids and boyfriend. Since having a baby three months ago, date nights are a thing of the past. So my boyfriend and I decided we NEEDED to get away for a night in the city. When I was younger during the Christmas season my mom and I always went into Boston to see The Nutcracker at the Boston Opera House. I grew up doing ballet so it's always such a special show to watch and the theater is so incredibly beautiful.
So we started our date night by of course dropping the kids off at their grandparents house and headed into Boston for an early dinner before the show. For dinner, we were recommended to try out Bartaco and it did not disappoint. It's located in the seaport and the food is inspired from the beach culture of Brazil, Uruguay and southern California. The best part is it is a family friendly restaurant with an amazing kids menu too, so we will definitely visit there again with the kids. To start we got the guac + roja + verde app and with the recommendation from our waiter, Jarrod got the bartaco margarita. All amazing! For our meal we ordered 12 tacos all together (don't judge). We tried almost all of them; baja fish, pork carnitas, spicy chorizo, falafel, seared swordfish, crispy rock shrimp, glazed pork belly, and roasted duck. My favorite was the baja fish taco - hands down the best fish taco ever.
If you're not familiar with how Bartaco works, ordering is a little different. Located at each table are slips of paper with copies of the menu on them. Each item on that piece of paper has a check box next to it. So to order you fill out the slip and place it in the holder on the table and your waiter comes to pick it up. Super easy and makes the chance of order mistakes way less. For dessert, I of course can't go anywhere that sells churros and not get them. So let me just tell you. The churros were life changing. This might be dramatic but I would drive across the country for them. So overall we had an amazing dinner and shoutout to our waiter Victor for giving us a great experience and service!
After dinner we grabbed an uber and headed over to the theater district to grab our tickets at will call. We arrived at the show about 45 minutes early which I highly suggest. Especially if you're getting tickets at will call, doing coat check and grabbing a drink in the lobby before the show starts. Anything you buy in the lobby you can bring into the show as well, snack/drinks/etc. I haven't been to the show in a couple years so one new thing that they do is a dancer meet and great before the show. Kids and adults alike can meet the bear and the bunny characters which of course I made my boyfriend do with me. 😆
The lobby of the Boston Opera House is so beautiful and magical it makes you feel as if you are part of the show yourself. We sat in the orchestra seating section but there really is not a bad seat in the house. The show itself was breathtaking as always. Mikko Nissinen's version of the Nutcracker was one of the best I've seen. He brought the characters and story to life through dance which is never an easy feat. I highly recommend this show to families, couples and anyone who loves the Christmas season as much as me! I think many people also think that the ballet has a reputation of being "boring" and something men wouldn't like; thus they think going as a date night isn't a good idea. My boyfriend ended up loving the show and it is such an exciting story and performance; I can't think of a better holiday date night idea. We had such an amazing time and it is going to become a new yearly tradition for us as a couple to go, eventually bringing our daughter as well when she's older. Tickets can be ordered online or over the phone from the Boston Opera House. This show runs until December 30th with afternoon and evening performances. Tickets start at $37 dollars so get yours today! Makes a great Christmas gift too!!
